How can we learn about ourselves and the world past and present through examining the Art form of Ceramics?

1st Term

Studio Work
Handbuilding Overview
A series of "Instructor Lead" projects to learn and practice the basics.

1) Pinch Pot - craftsmanship and innovation.
Tools and their uses

Using Basic Pinch pt method each student will make a small container. The will choose to add shape to create feet, lip, base, covers, etc

1a) Create personal small roll and stampers using slabs, coils, incising

2) Slab- using molds- Simple to ornate

  •  a) Using simple shapes to create shallow dishes/ platters Experiment with Incising/Drawing on Clay and/or methods to adding other other relief shapes to create theme etc.
  • b) Using colored Slip and Positive/Negative Stencils

Working with a partner or group. Create a presentation on your Blog about 1 of the following:

Culture  Each Group is assigned a Culture known for their Ceramic Art form

  • East Asia- China or Japan
  • West Asia - Islamic
  • North American Navajo
  • South American Mexican or Aztec
  • African
  • Greek
Find as least 1 finding for each and explain

  • Historical - Artifact by that Culture 
  • Forms by that Culture
  • Function of Forms

#3 Motif Research and sketches

Get ideas of Symbols you can use to create texture/pattern stamps
create thumbnail sketchs in your sketchbook (at least 5)
