Ceramic Studio at DHS
Today I worked in the Ceramics Studio.. here is what I accomplished
Moved work (Teapots/Bisque ware) out of cabinets used for slow drying to cart in the closet. this movable carts will most likely be used to unload finished pieces int he future
Also put tools on one side of table closer to sink.. the other side of the table is clear for wedging and cutting clay
Cleared out "office"... moved lamps to closet and moved stuff around for easy access of cabinets in there (glaze etc)
Cleared out contents of cabinets in front of Kilns. Took off Shelves and placed stilts and such on that counter in easy reach when loading
Erased Chalkboard and created an area in the corner for "stationary supplies" aslo moved all sketch books to this corner for use...scrap or simply for a student who doesn't have a sketchbook
Table in front of chalk board may be used for texture items for handbuilding
Found LCD and determined where I would position it for viewing Youtube and other visuals
Played with Wheel very quickly as my daughter was getting tired of being there.. I used an old bag of clay and it was kind of hard so it was really difficult to work with...

Colored Slip
1st step |
2nd Step |
The top photo shows the pieces of cut paper I place on the wet clay.
Then I painted the slip over the pieces being careful not to shift them. Then I removed the pieces of paper creating a Stencil effect... this is just a small approximately 4" x 6" but it is sufficient to experiment with the process. I decided to pinch the corners and create walls to make it a shallow "dish" .
Its fun to have a new "twist" on coloring clay and working with Contrast
Using White clay with Colored Clay
This is a Cylinder form I threw on the wheel I decided since it was kind of boring to Add Surface Design I did some Incising and then INLAYED with Colored Clay
Handbuilding- Slab
Coil with colored clay added then "rolled into" the slab

Essential Question:
How can we learn about ourselves and the world past and present through examining the Art form of Ceramics?
A series of "Instructor Lead" projects to learn and practice the basics.
1) Pinch Pot - craftsmanship and innovation.
Tools and their uses
Using Basic Pinch pt method each student will make a small container. The will choose to add shape to create feet, lip, base, covers, etc
1a) Create personal small roll and stampers using slabs, coils, incising
2) Slab- using molds- Simple to ornate
Slab building-Using Templates
Constructing a box
2 colored clay?
Coil-TBD
